THIS IS AN ONGOING REPORT, STAY TUNED!
I am keen to document all the plantings, some trees have been lost, so we plant a different species, others are thriving, so it has been very much trial & error. The mulching has been vital, in this climate, to keep the roots cool in the summer and warm in the winter. And of course retain the moisture, a great revolation to me has been the value of using cardboard/newspaper/old carpet etc and watching the worms bring the soil up to scratch. Some areas I planted were like concrete when we started, and now they are transformed! just through good mulching. One of my big ornamental grasses! in a pot.
Our residents here are many and varied! over the next few months I'll post photo's of some of them. We have some very large goanna's, akidna, lizards, and some magnificent parrots and bird species! Something a bit different here, I've experimented with a Poplar hedge beside the Bungalow! It is going to be a great feature and an ideal windbreak & privacy screen. They are planted very close and we keep them trimmed to whatever height we think.
And now today, actually this line of Poplars were all lost in the drought! the big dry- could not keep the water up sadly. Although I am not sorry now - because long term just not sustainable. Obviously planted so close they needed to be kept pretty wet- I am currently putting in an earth bank- and planting lots of low growing native/flowering shrubs! But it was certainly an experiment!
Pretty proud of the front paddock! after 85ton of Maydan feedlot manure, some direct till planting, some aerating, the poor old country is coming back! It was like a big clay pan when we first saw it. There is now a huge amount of natural cover, we've slashed the weeds on several occasions, and the native grasses have taken hold again. This shot is looking South looking forward to the warmer months, we have had a lot of rain during the last few weeks so it will be a wonderful Spring.
